Recently on Xiaohongshu, viewers had the opportunity to see an interview with Harvey Fung, President of the Canadian Community Table Tennis Association (CCTTA), where he shared how table tennis fosters both health and happiness.

Yesterday afternoon, President Fung continued the conversation, offering heartfelt stories and reflections on CCTTA’s remarkable journey as it enters its 19th year.
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Community
Founded nearly two decades ago by a small group of table tennis enthusiasts—new immigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan—CCTTA initially consisted of just a dozen members, primarily middle-aged and elderly players, with few children involved.
Today, the club has grown exponentially, welcoming over a hundred players daily. Women and teenagers have become a vibrant presence, making up 30-40% of regular attendees and injecting fresh energy into the sport.
Table Tennis as a Path to Better Health
Beyond the joy of competition, CCTTA has also made a profound impact on health and wellness. Over the past two years, in collaboration with the Yee Hong Centre, the association has been offering regular table tennis therapy sessions. What started as a small initiative with 10 participants in a weekly two-hour session has expanded to nearly 24 players. Starting in mid-April this year, a new class will be added to accommodate an additional 20 participants, with the number of tables increasing from 7 to a planned 13.
Clinical studies and health reports reveal that after six months to a year of consistent play, many seniors have experienced significant improvements in managing high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol, along with an overall boost in physical and mental well-being. One particularly inspiring case stands out—a nearly 90-year-old participant who once relied on a cane now walks with confidence, completely free of mobility aids.
A Sport That Brings Families and Communities Together
The most touching feedback comes from the families of the Yee Hong seniors, who have shared their gratitude: “Seeing our elders happy, healthy, and optimistic is truly priceless.” More than just a game, table tennis has become a way of life—one that fosters health, joy, and connection.
As CCTTA marks its 19th anniversary, it continues to inspire and uplift the community. Whether young or old, beginner or experienced, everyone is welcome to join the growing table tennis movement. Let’s celebrate this incredible sport together!
